Consumers enjoying the benefits of independent living skills training and services

SVILC staff offer resources and instruction in many aspects of self-sufficiency. The information assists Consumers with maintaining and/or increasing personal and social independence. A team of Occupational Therapists, Independent Living Skills Specialists, and Peer Mentors provide independent living skills training specific to each Consumer's individual needs.

Independent living skills services include information and referral, evaluation and training, adaptive device procurement, and an assistive technology loan program. In addition, classes and workshops are available.

Independent Living Skills classes and workshops are offered on topics such as:
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Consumer rights
  • Basic living skills
  • Cooking skills (basic through advanced)
  • Earthquake and disaster preparedness
  • Exercise and range of motion
  • Money management
  • Personal safety and first aid
  • Self-improvement
  • Social skills and communication
Classes generally meet weekly for three to eight sessions. A fee is charged per class, but it can be reduced or waived in cases of financial hardship. Click here to see a schedule of classes.
