SVILC Consumers getting help from personal assistants
SVILC's Personal Assistant Services (PAS) assist Consumers in finding and hiring personal assistants. SVILC staff members maintain a registry of private personal assistants and home health agencies. Individual and group instruction on recruiting and managing attendants are also available.
PAS Employment and Management Program
Recently, SVILC expanded PAS to include the PAS Employment and Management Program. This program, sponsored in part by the SBC and Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundations, is based upon independent living philosophy. It is designed to help Consumers train and manage personal assistants.

The PAS training series includes a workbook and video that detail a step-by-step guide to:
  • Determining needs and writing job descriptions
  • Interviewing, hiring, and training personal assistants
  • Completing job contracts for assistants
  • Supervising and managing assistants
  • Using time sheets
  • Avoiding common problems and miscommunications
SVILC Consumers getting help from personal assistants
"Personal assistance enables users to take their rightful place in family, at work and society with all the rights and duties that the general population takes for granted. Personal assistance users not only manage on their own, they can also take their share of household and child-rearing. With personal assistance we can attend school and educate ourselves, enter the labor market and become tax-payers."
Adolf Ratzka,
Director of Sweden's Institute of Independent Living
