The Therapeutic Recreation Program at SVILC provides opportunities for adults with severe disabilities to explore leisure activities as a way to meet both physical and social needs. Increased self-esteem, greater confidence outside of the home, and opportunities for socializing are just a few of the benefits associated with therapeutic recreation.
The recreation program provides information and referral, community outings, and out-of-state travel trips. |

Community Outings |
 |
SVILC offers Consumers the opportunity to participate in bi-weekly community excursions. All of the activities are planned using the input of SVILC Consumers. One activity a month is co-sponsored by the San Jose Parks and Recreation Office of Therapeutic Services (OTS) Outreach Program. SVILC and OTS work together to plan, implement, and evaluate the experiences. This joint program, the "RECing Crew," is extremely popular and has been in place for many years.
The majority of recreation costs are funded through grants and donations; however, Consumers are charged a small fee for participation.
Therapeutic recreation outings include:
- Arts and crafts fairs
- Barbeques
- Lunch and dinner outings
- Museum tours
- Rafting
- Sea kayaking
- Seasonal events
- Shopping excursions to the mall
- Trips to plays, musicals, operas, and sporting events
- Visits to the beach and parks
